D. G. Smith built his brick commercial building in the Italianate style and opened a pharmacy in 1885 along what had been Texas Street in cowtown Abilene.  The Smiths lived upstairs over the store.  Son-in-law Theo Nusz operated a general merchandise store in the building from 1895-1945.
